3G telephone services could be launched in Moldova by this yearend
Third generation (3G) mobile phone services could be launched in Moldova towards the end of this year. The director of the National Regulatory Agency in Electronic Communications and Information Technology Sergiu Satnic said on July 31 that the four mobile operators, Orange, Moldocell, Eventis and Unite, can already apply for frequencies and radio channels for providing 3G services.
According to Satnic, the licenses will be issued for a period of 15 years and could be later renewed. A license will cost US$8 million. The license owners will be obliged to launch 3G services not later than August 1, 2009.
In a year, the license holders must cover the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti, in the second year – the municipality of Comrat and Cahul, Orhei, Ungheni and Soroca district centers, while in the third year – the other 29 district centers.
Satnic said that all the four mobile phone operators accepted basically the conditions of the license and are technically ready to furnish such services.
There are an estimated 300 million users of 3G services worldwide. 3G technologies enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment.//REPORTER.MD
