Agricultural production dropped by 4.6% in 2006
Agricultural production dropped by 4.6% in 2006 against the background of a dramatic recession of production of grains, tobacco, and fruits. According to the preliminary estimations, the agricultural production constituted in current prices 13 billion 695 million lei (US$1.1 billion), according to the report of the National Statistics Bureau on the social and economic development of the Republic of Moldova in 2006.
"Last year's low temperatures compromised a significant part of the agricultural cultures; consequently the grains and leguminous production dropped by 20.9% compared to the previous year, which considerably affected the agriculture sector", specialists in this sphere estimate.
The 13.6% drop in fruit production and a 10.5% drop in grapes production have also had a severe impact. Vegetal production reduced by 8.5% on the whole, so that the 4.4% raise of animal production was unable to reduce the handicap.
The results are under the expectations of the Ministry of Agriculture, which estimated in late November that after two years of growth, a stall will characterize agriculture in 2006, and the production volume will not exceed the amount of 14.5 billion lei.
At the beginning of 2006, the Ministry forecasted an increase of 3.6%. The forecasts were revised, after the agro-industrial sector registered a 4% drop over nine months.
In 2005, agriculture marked a raise of 0.8%, and in 2004, of 20.8%.
IDIS "Viitorul" experts say that the stall in this sector is due to "the lack of some agriculture policies adjusted to the domestic reality".
In 2006, the Republic of Moldova produced about 2.298 million tons of grains, including 695 thousand tons of wheat and 1.324 million tons of corn, 379 thousand tons of sun-flower seeds, 1,181 million tons of sugar beet, 5 thousand tons of tobacco, 478 thousand tons of vegetables, 333 thousand tons of fruit, and 465 thousand tons of grapes. // BASA-Press
