Aussie shares close week at record high

The Australian share market ended the week at a record closing high with stocks up 0.5 percent across the board.

The key All Ordinaries Index gained 32 points to 6,580 and the ASX 200 rose 29 points to 6,567.

Once again the mining sector led the charge with BHP Billiton up 2.3 percent to close at $39.23 and shares in Rio Tinto were 67 cents higher at $95.31.

Woodside Petroleum jumped 2.6 percent to $44.21 as oil prices surged.

The Australian dollar traded near an 18-year high against the greenback at 88.27 U.S. cents and was buying 101 Japenese yen and 62 euro cents.

Spot gold fetched $736 an ounce and West Texas crude oil traded at $82 a barrel.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
