Bottled wine exports to Ukraine down 30%
Moldova’s exports of bottled wine to Ukraine over January-September 2008 totaled 20,800 tonnes, a 30% decrease compared with the corresponding period last year.
Dmitri Sayfudinov, the director of Vinfort Company, which is the largest importer of Moldovan wines, was quoted by the Ukrainian press as saying that exports fell following the 20-30% rise in the prices of bottled wines this year. He explained that this is due to the stronger Moldovan leu that cost even 9 lei per US dollar, as against 12 lei earlier.

The Ukrainian winemakers say that the decrease in wine imports does not affect business at present. According to them, the national producers have a market share of 90% and the other share of 10% does not essentially affect trade.
But representatives of the Ukrainian Association of Winemakers are concerned that the situation could change in the near future given that import taxes on alcoholic products were reduced after Ukraine joined the World Trade Organization. Consequently, the cheap wines from the third world countries can invade Ukraine.
