Chisinau International Airport issued new environment accreditation

The Chisinau International Airport has been issued an accreditation certificate on reduced carbon dioxide emissions. It is the first airport in Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to get this accreditation.

The PR manager of the Chisinau International Airport, Adriana Doruc, has said that the certificate is the official recognition of the airport's efforts to protect the environment. Thus, the Chisinau International Airport became one of the airports characterized by a low level of emissions in the atmosphere.

The Airport Carbon Accreditation is a European standard for airports. It is the only independent programme, approved by institutions and designed for airports. The programme comprises four accreditation levels: mapping, reduction, optimization and neutrality of greenhouse gas emissions.

Presently, only 30 European airports, including the Budapest airport (Mapping), the Brussels airport (Reduction), the Zurich airport (Optimization) and the Oslo airport (Neutrality) have passed this accreditation.

The airports accredited so far hold over 35 per cent of the annual European air traffic. Starting from 2009, when the Airport Carbon Accreditation Scheme was launched, the carbon dioxide emissions dropped by 570,000 tones.
