EBRD's new strategy for Moldova to help overcome crisis situations

The situation in Moldova's socioeconomic, political and investment sectors, as well as the new 2010-13 strategy for Moldova of the European Investment Bank (EBRD) were discussed by acting President Mihai Ghimpu and members of the EBRD Board of Directors in Chisinau today, the presidential press service has said.

Ghimpu told the EBRD officials that the ruling Alliance for European Integration had worked out and was implementing a reforming programme backed by western partners, the goal of which is to restore the national economy and create an investment-friendly climate. "To reach the primary objectives stipulated in the government's action programme, in particular to eradicate poverty and secure European integration, we should restore our economy first of all. But this can be done only in conditions of a constant flow of investments in all the economic sectors. In the context, we rely a lot on fruitful cooperation with the EBRD, which has been actively promoting foreign investments in Moldova and has been contributing to the improvement of the investment climate and to the support of Moldova-based financial institutions," Ghimpu said.

The acting president welcomed the EBRD's new strategy for Moldova, which establishes complex tasks for the improvement of the business environment, backs the economic diversification, the reform of the energy sector, infrastructure and municipal transport, etc. Ghimpu said that the implementation of the strategy would make it possible to overcome crisis situations not only in the above-mentioned sectors, but also in other socioeconomic areas.

Referring to the ongoing constitutional crisis, Ghimpu said that the alliance found a solution to it, which is backed by European institutions. He gave assurances that it would not affect the fulfillment of the government's action programme or the achievement of its goals.

Kurt Bayer, a member of the ERBRD Board of Directors, said that the bank would further support and assist the implementation of the alliance's action programme. "The EBRD will remain a loyal partner of the Moldovan economy, by providing the support necessary to promote reforms initiated by the current leadership," Bayer said.
