EU helps repair roads in Moldova
A 10-kilometer-long portion of the M1 road between the villages of Ivanovca, Obileni and Cotul Morii in the Hincesti raion has been commissioned after a thorough repair funded by the European Union in the framework of the EU Cross Border Cooperation (CBC) project.
On the occasion of the repair completion, Dirk Schuebel, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Moldova, said at a news conference here today that such projects are aimed at the economic development of Moldova's trans-border populated areas in a hard economic condition.
The diplomat said the road portion concerned meets European standards, so now it will be the raion administration's concern to maintain the road in the present-day excellent shape.
The works involved 7 thousand workers, who also thoroughly repaired sidewalks and 2 bridges. The project's total budget amounted to 750 thousand euros, of which sum the European Commission provided €563 thousand.
Dirk Schuebel said that on the Moldovan Government's request, a feasibility study of a new would-be project - the M3 highway Chisinau-Giurgiulesti - has been carried out, and that this is going to be a much larger enterprise [over 200 kilometers], which may possibly be funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International European Bank.
