Explosion at main gas pipeline in Transnistria
A deafening explosion took place at a main gas pipeline in Transnistria at 05.35am on Wednesday, Infotag was told by TiraspolTransGas, the owner and operator of the Transnistrian section of this trans-continental fuel transportation facility.
The accident happened several kilometers east of Tiraspol, near the Dniester River. The 1200-millimeter-diameter pipe, lying 2 meters beneath the land surface, went off with a tremendous force, forming a crater about 10 meters across. Fortunately, the accident site is in the field, quite far from the nearest populated area, so nobody was injured.
TiraspolTransGas engineers are saying they cannot say yet how much time it will take to liquidate the accident consequences and re-start the pipeline because they have not yet reached the place. They assured that gas supply for households will not be interrupted. However, due to the pipeline disruption, the Russian natural gas supply over to the Balkans has been stopped.
The explosion area has been surrounded by the militia and military in a radius of 2-3 kilometers. So far, nobody can approach the very explosion site, because the gas available in the pipe is still burning out, and a forbiddingly high air temperature will be raging for some time yet. Beside this, all field roads leading to the place are impassable due to a torrential rain that happened there yesterday. Meanwhile, Tiraspol citizens will never forget the enormously high flame they could see from their homes even several kilometers from the explosion site.
