FDA issues final Vail beds recall report

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned users of Vail Enclosed Bed Systems to stop using the product because it poses a safety risk.

The FDA issued its final recommendations Wednesday for users of Vail Enclosed Bed Systems that updates the agency's 2005 preliminary recall report.

FDA officials said the beds pose a health risk because patients can become entrapped in them and suffocate. The padded beds -- covered with zippered nylon netting that encloses the patient -- were originally sold to allow caretakers to handle at-risk confused or combative patients.

Because of the suffocation risk, the FDA has advised hospitals, nursing homes and consumers to stop using the beds and move the patient to an alternate bed. Consumers, the FDA said, should consult with their physicians about other options. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
