Fixed-line telephone sector outrun by mobile phone sector
Turnover in the mobile telephone sector in the first half of this year was 1.37 billion lei, an increase of over 27% year on year, the National Regulatory Agency in Electronic Communications and Information Technologies (ANRCETI) said.
According to ANRCETI, sales in the fixed-line telephone sector fell by 1.57% to 1.114,9 billion lei. For the first time in the past five years, the fixed-line telephone sector was outstripped by the mobile telephone sector.
The number of mobile phone users over January-June 2008 rose by 42.5% compared with the corresponding period last year, to 2.169,9 million. Fixed-line subscribers increased in number by 4.47% to 1.87,3 million.
The mobile phone companies during six months connected about 287,100 new users, while the fixed-line telephone operators – only 7,430 people.
The Agency’s specialists say that the mobile phone services market will continue to grow. The penetration rate at the end of this year will be over 70%.
Mobile phone operator Orange Moldova SA accounted for 66.29% of the January-June sales. At the same time, Moldtelecom SA continues to hold the largest share of the fixed-line telephone market – 96.44%.
