The Moldovan and German governments today signed a protocol which stipulates 8.5 million euros in assistance for Moldova. The protocol was signed by Moldovan State Minister Victor Bodiu and German Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation Otmar Greiff after today's consultations, the government's press service has said.

"Namely in this period, marked by economic and financial crisis, we want to support the Moldovan government, but first of all, Moldova's citizens, and so, we tripled the assistance compared with 2008. Residents from rural settlements and small and medium-sized enterprises, that have been worst hit by the crisis, should benefit from this money first and foremost," Otmar Greiff said.

Victor Bodiu said he is satisfied with the constructive way the consultations were held and thanked Germany for supporting Moldova.

Under the signed document, five million euros will be used by the Moldovan Social Investments Fund, which has earlier benefited from financial allocations on behalf of Germany as well.

The other 3.5 million euros, meant for technical cooperation, will be distributed to the following projects, Farming Sector's Modernisation, Upgrading Public Utility Services, Support for Craftsmen's Chamber and Professional Training, as well as the Education and Specialists Fund.

Germany's technical and financial assistance for Moldova has amounted to about 40 million euros, including the sum seen in the above-mentioned protocol.
