Ghimpu calls on Moldovan winemakers to explore domestic market

Acting President Mihai Ghimpu has proposed to reorient Moldovan wine selling to domestic market.

During his visit to wine producing enterprise Purcari, Ghimpu said if the proposal is accepted Moldovan wine companies will not depend on the Russian market, and they will not suffer from Russian embargo. "We are not able to use domestic market. Most wine producing states consume inside country about 70% of their wine products, and Romania even more -90%", Ghimpu said. Director of the company Victor Bostan said it is possible to double or to treble internal wine consumption through mediation of government and president.

According to him, Moldovans consume about 4 million bottles of wine every year, but export about 100-120 million bottles; and it "would be better to reach the 50:50 correlation in domestic and foreign markets". Purcari company produces about 1 million bottles of wine per year, a quarter of them is sold in Moldova. Most considerable importers of this company's wines are Romania, Poland, Germany and Japan. Purcari wine exportation to Russian market was about 98% till 2006.
