January-June remittances rose 1.6 times
The Moldovans working abroad during the first half of this year sent home through banks about US$755.95 million, up US$474.74 million or 1.6 times compared with the corresponding period last year.
According to the National Bank of Moldova, remittances in January this year totaled US$89.72 million, in February – US$104.55million, in March – US$126.4 million, in April – US$156.5 million, in May – US$131.27 million, in June – US$147.51 million. About 76.4% of the remittances or over US$577.44 million reached Moldova via Western Union, Migom, Travelex, Strada Italia, Turkiye Express, Money Gram, Moldova Express, Anelik , Leader and other money transfer systems.
Experts say that the remittances sent from abroad are in reality much larger than the officially recorded ones as the Moldovans use alternative methods for sending money home.
According to a World Bank report, Moldova takes the first position in the world by the share of remittances in the Gross Domestic Product - 36.2%.
Last year, remittances came to US$1.218 billion, in 2006 – to US$854.6 million, while in 2005 – to US$683.25 million.//REPORTER.MD
