Lufthansa makes another attempt to enter Moldovan market
Lufthansa, which is Germany's national air carrier and the largest air company in Germany, is making another attempt to enter the Moldovan air transportation market. It is planned that already from summer the company will begin making regular flights on the Munich-Chisinau line.
Minister of Transport and Roads Anatol Salaru told Infotag that he knows about Lufthansa's intention, but he does not know any details.
"The minister have not received any official notification, but if such decision is taken, the company will be able to make flights on a parity basis with Moldovan air carriers in accordance with bilateral agreements, signed by Moldova", Salaru said.
The minister added that on the part of Moldova such right may be granted both to the Air Moldova state company, which provides the majority share of the passenger flow on the European lines, and the Moldavian Airlines private company
Moldavian Airlines Deputy Director Anatoly Bzovii told Infotag that his company is interested and ready to make flights in partnership with other air companies on European air lines.
He remarked that last year Moldavian Airlines submitted its application to the Transport Agency for making Chisinau-Munich-Chisinau flights, but its request was rejected.
Bzovii considers that the Moldovan air market will be liberalized sooner or later.
"?In the context of Moldova's striving to be admitted to the European Union it will be one of the European's most insistent requirements", Bzovii considers
Only Air Moldova and the Cirrus Airlines German company make regular flights between two countries. In 2002-2003 Lufthansa already tried to enter the Moldovan air market and pretended to the Chisinau-Frankfurt-am-Main line, but that time the Air Moldova state company had already had the license for making flights on this line, which fact caused a prolonged conflict around this line.
Air Moldova is the largest air company in the republic. It was set up in 1993. The company has airplanes А-320, Embrair, YaK-40. It makes regular flights to 16 such cities as Moscow, London, Rome, Lisbon, and the Athens. In 2007 the company carried more than 317 thousand passengers.
