German luxury-car maker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG said Canada's Magna International Inc. would make a Mini-brand sport utility vehicle.

The new model will be built at Magna's Magna Steyr factory in Oberwaltersdorf, Austria, a BMW spokesman said.

Magna Steyr, properly known as Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co. KG, did substantial development of the BMW X3 compact luxury crossover SUV and makes all X3s.

It will build about 40,000 four-wheel-drive Mini SUVs a year, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported.

The SUVs will hit the market in 2010, the Frankfurt, Germany, newspaper said.

BMW would not comment on how many Mini SUVs Magna Steyr would make for BMW a year or when production would begin.

BMW passed over independent car maker Wilhelm Karmann GmbH, of Osnabrueck, Germany, in awarding the contract to Magna, of Aurora, Ontario, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said.

Karmann, which made BMW coupe and sedan models from the 1960s to the 1980s, had pushed hard for the contract, the newspaper said.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
