Moldova details foreign investment statistics
Overall foreign investments in Moldova exceeded 2.6 billion dollars by 1 January 2010, according to data provided by the Moldovan Investment and Export Promotion Organization (MIEPO).
Contacted by MOLDPRES, MIEPO executive director Andrei Timus said that the Netherlands is Moldova's top foreign investor, holding 22 per cent of all investments. It is followed by Cyprus with 11.4 per cent, Italy with 11.2 per cent, Russia with 7.7 per cent, Spain with 5.7 per cent, Germany with 5.6 per cent and the USA with 4.7 per cent.
Also, the UK, France, Romania and other countries invested in Moldova's economy.
All in all, 85 countries have invested in Moldova so far, with EU countries having invested 76 per cent of the foreign capital that entered Moldova.
Foreign investors are mainly interested in wholesale and retail trade, which attracted about 26 per cent of all the investments, processing industry 22 per cent, power, gas and water supply 15 per cent, restaurants and hotels 13 per cent, financial services 13 per cent and the real estate sector 10 per cent, Timus also said.
