Moldova lost its right over Barza Alba trademark in Russia
Moldova did not succeed in preserving the right over the brand name Barza Alba on Russia’s territory.
According to Russian press reports, the Chamber of Patent-Related Disputes of Russia on July 3 decided to cancel Moldovan authorities’ right over Barza Alba trade mark in Russia following an application from the Russian company Altair SRL, which said that this brand has not been used in Russian over the past three years. Altair filed the application in September 2007.
Yet, as the customs services of the two countries reported, Moldova supplied about 90,000 decaliters of Barza Alba cognacs to Russia during November 2007-April 2008.
Currently, Barza Alba, which was founded in 1978 and became one of the most famous cognac brands in the post-Soviet area, is made by Aroma Company, while the brand is property of the State Agency “Moldova-Vin”.
Sergey Buliba, the president of the Chamber of Patent-Related Disputes, said that Moldova-Vin could not prove that Barza Alba brand has been used in Russia during the past three years. “If the Chamber’s decision is approved, the trademark will lose its legal protection in Russia, but this does not mean that Moldova could not supply Barza Alba products,” Buliba said, adding that the decision could be approved within two months.//REPORTER.MD
