Moldova raises excise duty on used cars import in 2010, except from CIS
Starting January 1, 2010, the Republic of Moldova has raised the excise duty on the import of used cars, according to RosBusinessConsulting news service (RBC).
Moldova's customs service announced that the excise duty on the import of cars with an operational deadline of between 3 and 5 years was increased to EUR 0.02 per each cubic centimeter of the engine volume. For the cars with an operational deadline of between 5 and 7 years the excise duty was raised to EUR 0.03. The fee for the car's customs legalization is 0.4% of its customs value.
Cars imported from the CIS countries (Russia and Ukraine are the main countries where cars are produced) are exempt from excise duty.
No comments have been made by the pro-Western leaning Moldovan Government why cars produced in the West are taxed, but those in the CIS are exempt from import taxes.
