Moldovan acting president meets World Bank officials
Parliament Speaker, acting President Mihai Ghimpu today met the World Bank's (WB) regional director for Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine, Martin Raiser, and the director of the World Bank's Office in Moldova, Melanie Marlett, who ends her activity in Moldova, the parliament's mass media relations department has said.
Attending the meeting was also a WB programme manager for Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine, Connie Luff, who will exercise the office of acting director of the World Bank office in Moldova.
The president thanked for the financial support given Moldova by the World Bank, stressing that the country further relies on the support of the foreign partners. At the same time, Mihai Ghimpu thanked Melanie Marlett for the work carried out in Moldova starting from 2007, when she was sworn in office as country manager for Moldova. Ghimpu said that the WB official had an essential role in forming the strategies, managing the portfolio, coordinating the relations between the clients and partners, adjusting the donors' actions and the agenda of getting the results.
Mihai Ghimpu said that the carrying out of the projects financed by the World Bank depends on the continuity ensured in the implementation of the reforms started by the Alliance for European Integration (AIE), as well as on the political situation in Moldova. "The political instability affects Moldova's economic development and makes the country less attractive for foreign investors. We want to re-found the Alliance for European Integration, which is to continue promoting the democratic reforms in Moldova and ensure a European future for the Moldovan citizens. The government act should be lasting, while taking into account the democratic mechanism of governing a state and the pro-European majority vote of the citizens from 28 November," the president said.
President Mihai Ghimpu referred to the reforms which Moldova is implementing and the results which started being achieved, as well as to the post-electoral evolutions and consultations held by the representatives of the parliamentary parties to create a ruling alliance.
Martin Raiser said that the World Bank appreciates the efficient cooperation with the Moldovan authorities. He expressed confidence in the continuation of these relations to attain durable results and partnerships. The regional director for Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine said that the WB prepares a report on the situation in Moldova and prospects for development. The document is to include also suggestions for the authorities to form an agenda of reforms that are to be implemented, as well as strategies for Moldova to become attractive both for its citizens and foreign investors.
So far, the World Bank has financed 25 projects in Moldova, amounting to 613.4 million dollars, of which 436.7 million dollars has been already disbursed. The portfolio of projects managed by the WB in Moldova is vast and regards providing health and social assistance services, investments in the rural zone, roads' sector, energy field, environmental protection, quality education, public money management, public administration's reform, etc.
