Moldovan premier meets experts from U.S. Department of Energy
Prime Minister Vlad Filat met a group of experts of the United States' Department of Energy, the government's communications and press relations department has said.
Attending the meeting were U.S. Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Moldova Asif J. Chaudhry, Interior Minister Alexei Roibu and the director of the Customs Service, Tudor Balitchi.
The discussion focused on regional security and Moldova's role in ensuring stability and safety in the region.
Asif J. Chaudhry said that the USA carried out a string of projects in Ukraine, Bulgaria and other countries to improve the regional security. Via the projects, the borders were provided with special equipment which helps prevent and counteract the spread of radioactive substances and other dangerous materials that may be used to manufacture mass destruction weapons.
The U.S. ambassador confirmed his country's willingness to start a similar project in Moldova as well. To this end, the sides agreed on the elaboration of a memorandum of understanding that will define the responsibilities of the participants in the programme.
Asif J. Chaudhry said that the equipment will be given free of charge. Also, the American experts showed willingness to provide every necessary support to train specialists, as well as to offer assistance initially for the use of the specialized equipment due to be offered to the Moldovan border checkpoints.
The prime minister praised the initiative of the U.S. partners, noting that it will contribute to achieving the Moldovan government's goal to ensure efficient border control.
"This objective is important for us, including in the context of the agenda that Moldova committed to implement to secure a visa free regime with the European Union," the prime minister said.
Vlad Filat showed confidence that this programme will complete the set of the projects successfully implemented in concert with American partners. He spoke in favour of starting works in this direction immediately.
