Moldovan premier meets Italian foreign minister
Prime Minister Vlad Filat met Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini in Rome, the government's communications and press relations department has said.
The officials discussed issues related to the social protection of Moldovans working in Italy, consolidation of bilateral relations, Transnistrian conflict settlement, Moldova's European integration, liberalization of the visa regime, etc.
Vlad Filat appreciated the intensification of the political dialogue with Italy.
He specified that Moldova wants to maintain and develop this dialogue at all the levels.
The prime minister thanked Italy for supporting the European integration process, as well as for the positive attitude towards the Moldovan citizens who work in Italy. He emphasized the important role of Franco Frattini personally in the development of bilateral ties.
"We have very dynamic relations with the EU. In 2010, we launched talks on an association agreement, dialogue on visas; we are about to start negotiations on a free trade agreement. Italy is a constant supporter of these efforts," Vlad Filat said.
Franco Frattini reconfirmed Italy's support for Moldova's European integration aspirations, as well as for the Moldovans working in Italy.
The minister said that Italy wants to be more involved in the Transnistrian settlement process to identify a solution to this conflict.
The two officials spoke out for taking specific steps in order to bolster the economic cooperation between Moldova and Italy. The sides agreed to organize a forum of Moldovan and Italian business people and set up a Moldovan-Italian council of business people.
Franco Frattini asked Italian Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Moldova Stefano De Leo to involve and ensure the participation of the most important Italian business people, as well as officials from administration bodies in this forum.
Another subject of the discussion was an agreement on readmission between the two countries. The sides stressed the importance of the document.
Vlad Filat and Franco Frattini emphasized the need to further develop bilateral relations in many fields.
