Moldovan premier says financial shortage should not hinder healthcare reform

Prime Minister Vlad Filat held a meeting with healthcare decision-makers at the Heath Ministry, the government's communications and press relations department has said.

The participants in the meeting discussed the reforms due to be implemented in the healthcare sector, the current situation and expected results.

Health Minister Andrei Usatii briefed those present on the problems faced by the national healthcare sector and the needed solutions. Usatii said that it is necessary to create 10 district hospitals, so that people be not forced to Chisinau for medical investigations. The minister added that healthcare institutions in 126 settlements are short-staffed, with district doctors being obliged to regularly visit these villages.

Usatii said that relevant bodies are working to amend the healthcare legislation in order to fight corruption and protectionism. The participants in the meeting also noted that equipment in hospitals is outdated and pointed out the need for up-to-date equipment.

Talking to journalists, Vlad Filat said that the healthcare sector is extremely important and that the financial shortage should not hinder its reformation.

The prime minister said that no efforts should be spared to fight corruption and protectionism in this sector.

"We will act seriously and assiduously to secure the Moldovans' right to be treated efficiently and at a high level," the premier said.

Filat expressed discontent with the formation of medication prices, noting the poor efficiency of reforms in this field.

"I have asked that a plan on the reformation of the Medication Agency, including by changing its leadership and dismissing the head of the Medication Service within the Health Ministry, should be worked out in the nearest future," he said.

Filat noted that another subject broached at the meeting was the situation in the sanitation field, which is currently facing a string of problems.

Vlad Filat said that he will pay a similar visit to another ministry on 31 March.
