Moldovan rebel region, Ukrainian police bust counterfeiting ring
The state security ministry in Moldova's breakaway Dniester region has confirmed its involvement in detaining a group of counterfeiters by Ukrainian policemen in the southern Ukrainian town of Illichivsk, the Moldovan Infotag news agency reported on 1 June.
The ministry said in a statement that among the detainees were the former officer of the Ukrainian border service, Lt-Col Ruslan Matat, and "Ukrainian and Moldovan citizens with residence in the Dniester region", who tried to sell fake 16,400 dollars and 2,800 euros, Infotag reported.
According to the ministry, Ruslan Matat, who at the moment of the arrest headed a registration office at the Illichivsk seaport, smuggled fake dollars and euros from Moldova to Ukraine and was selling them in Odessa Region, the agency added.
