Moldova's agriculture to benefit from 110M euros of foreign assistance

Moldova's agro-industrial sector will benefit from financial assistance worth 110 million euros on behalf of foreign donors in 2010-13. The proceeds are part of the 1.936-billion-euros assistance given to the Moldovan government by development partners in Brussels on 24 March 2010.

Agriculture and Food Minister Valeriu Cosarciuc told a news conference today that the 110 million euros will be used to create market infrastructure, establish modern systems of certification and control of food quality and safety and facilitate farmer's access to crediting lines.

Also, money will be earmarked to strengthen the capacities of research and education institutions in the agricultural sector. Cosarciuc stressed that about a half of the 110 million euros meant for agricultural projects will be grants given especially by the European Commission, and the other part are credits allocated on easy terms by the World Bank. The loans will be provided for a 40-year repayment period, a ten-year grace period and a 0.75-per cent interest rate, Cosarciuc said.

Cosarciuc added that the European Commission is also willing to provide another 148 million euros for the implementation of cross-border agricultural projects by Romania, Moldova and Ukraine.
