By Valeriu Gonta / Moldova.org / -- As of today, the Romanian citizens can freely work in Italy. The decision was taken by Italian government at the end of 2011. The Romanian Ministry of Labor welcomed the decision.

“We are glad of the Italian government’s decision. The removal of labor restrictions imposed to the Romanian and Bulgarian workers means an important signal, in accordance with the basic values and fundamental rights of the European Union,” the Minister of Labor, Sulfina Barbu said in a statement. She added that Romania is grateful especially because in Italy live and work over 1 million Romanians.

Before 2012, the Italian officials had imposed restrictions in several fields of work. Only those working in agriculture, hotel services, tourism, households, construction, engineering and seasonal work didn’t need a working permit.

Island is another country which has removed the working restrictions for the Romanians as from today. Being a non-EU country, but a Schengen-zone state, Island opened its whole labor market to Romania and Bulgaria.

Germany has also made some new regulations regarding the Romanian workers. Hence, the Romanians with a university degree will not be required to apply for a working permit anymore if they will be employed according to their degree. The seasonal workers can also work without a special permit. For the other categories of workers, the restrictions still apply until the end of 2013.

Other 10 European states keep their work restrictions to the Romanian and Bulgarian workers. These are Austria, Belgium, France, Germany (partly), Ireland, Luxemburg, Malta, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Spain.
