One third of monthly tickets for public transportation not sold after price rise
Transportation companies in Chisinau[, the capital of Moldova,] suffer losses, as one third of monthly tickets have not been sold after the rise of their prices.
"Only 66 percent of all monthly bus tickets for October were sold," Veaceslav Terna, chief of the directorate for public transportation and communication in the Chisinau City Hall, told a sitting on Monday. "The Electric Transportation Operator has lost larger amounts because it sold fewer tickets."
Terna fell short of revealing the losses, saying that they are large.
Prices of monthly tickets for buses and trolleys in the Chisinau municipality rose by 60 percent and 33 percent on October 1, in line with a decision by the Chisinau City Hall. A monthly ticket for trolleys costs 70 lei. Schoolchildren pay 30 lei while students 45 lei. At the same time, a monthly bus ticket for schoolchildren costs 72 lei and 104 lei for students and other categories of travellers.
Earlier, Terna has assured that "queues at pay desks are endless."
The directorate for public transportation and communication of the Chisinau City Hall said that the Electric Transportation Operator issues more than 13,000 monthly tickets while the Urban Bus Operator issues about 4,000 tickets.
According to statistics of transportation enterprises, about 60 percent of passengers who travel by trolley buy monthly tickets and only 7 percent of people who travel by bus buy them. // BASA-Press
