The Government of Japan organized a workshop program on Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion for Moldova from 16 February to 25 February 2008. Other participating countries include Belarus and Ukraine.

From each participating country two governmental officials practically involved in the national policy-making in SME sector have been selected. Moldova was represented by the Deputy Minister and the expert of the Ministry of Economy. Thus, 6 specialists from Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine visited Japan to share the experience and learn the best practices in the field.

Objectives of the above-mentioned workshop program were: 1) promoting development of market economy in NIS countries through the study of SME promotion policy in Japan; and 2) exchanging views about SME promotion policy with Japanese governmental officials and staff of related organizations and SMEs.

In addition to the above-mentioned workshop, the Government of Japan has been continuously supporting Moldovan SMEs. SME development as a foundation for sustainable market economy is defined as one of the priority areas of Japanese assistance to Moldova. The Government of Japan has been supporting the implementation of the Moldovan SME promotion program since 2005 funded by Japanese Non-Project Grant Aid. The program provides opportunity to purchase products and equipment that will be used for the needs of local SMEs. Three tranches were extended under the program with a total budget of 8.7 million US dollars.

Since 2003 six Moldovan specialists have been trained in the various aspects of SME Promotion in Japan as a part of the events that Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) arranged for Moldova.

Embassy of Japan hopes that such workshop will help to pass on the expertise of Japan in this critical issue for NIS countries. And it will, definitely, contribute to further development of friendly relations between the countries of NIS and Japan.
