Report: EU has hidden employees

A think tank in Britain has discovered a vast discrepancy in the number of the European Commission's employees, a report says.

The Telegraph said the commission's Web site claims it has 25,000 staff members; the British Government estimates it at about 37,000. But Open Europe, a think tank in Westminster says it has found that the total actually exceeds 54,000 employees.

The commission is the executive body of the European Union.

The 29,000 allegedly hidden employees are believed to be working in low-profile organizations such as the European Data Protection Supervisor, the Community Plant Variety Office and the European Personal Selection Agency, the newspaper said.

The Telegraph reported Open Europe also discovered that there are far more officials in Brussels earning top salaries than in the British civil service. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
