The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) is waiting for the Moldovan Government's decision on its participation in the first-ever nation-wide agricultural census in the independent Republic of Moldova's history, it was confirmed at the roundtable conference organized here today to draw up the results of the mission a group of UN Food and Agricultural Organization experts has just accomplished.

FAO expert Mukesh K. Srivastava said an Agreement on providing 80% of the census expenditures by the SIDA has been practically ready, but the Swedish Agency would like to have guarantees that the Moldovan Government is able to provide the remaining 20%.

He said that during two weeks the FAO mission scrutinized the documentation of a limited-scale agricultural census undertaken several years ago in only one Moldovan raion - Causeni. And the experts saw that Moldova is practically prepared to a nation-wide census: there are all necessary equipment and skilled personnel available, and cooperation ties duly established.

Expert Ilie Dumitrescu said the census needs to be launched the sooner the better because by the summer of 2010 the structure of agricultural enterprises here may change: entities may cease to exist, or move to another place, or change their profiles.

"The census in Moldova may serve an example for other countries to follow", Dumitrescu said.

The census cost is estimated to be some 94 million lei.
