Telecommunication market in Moldova will grow due to investment in wideband access to the Internet

The National Regulatory Telecommunication and Information Technologies Agency (NRTITA) forecasts the growth of the telecommunication market by 5-8% in 2010, Director of the agency Sergiu Sitnic said at a news conference, dedicated to the results of 2009 and prospects of the market development for 2010.

The NRTITA relies on the precipitous growth of the wideband access to the Internet, the number of whose subscribers will increase by 45% and will reach 270 thousand.

At the same time, the most considerable growth (twofold) is expected in the raions. Already in 2009 Chisinau's share in the wideband access to the Internet dropped from 80% to 64%. After the capital city the highest access share is in Balti and Orhei, the lowest share - in Glodeni, Falesti, Soldanesti and Donduseni.

Sitnic considers that the market operators will be interested in investing in the development of the wideband access to the Internet, where the development prospects are the most promising: introduction of convergence technology services and data transfer, voice, video and mobile services.

The National Regulatory Telecommunication and Information Technologies Agency also plans a considerable growth of the mobile telephony: the number of users will increase by 12% and will exceed 3 million and the penetration level will reach 86-88%.

The fixed telephony market will be stabilized, the number of subscribers will increase insignificantly (+1.5%) and the penetration level will constitute 32%.

Against the background of a 6.5% GDP decrease in 2009, the sales of the telecommunication market dropped only by 1.7% and constituted 5.63 billion lei ($450 million) or 9.4% of the GDP. The most considerable growth was registered at the market of the access to the Internet (+19.2%), the sales of this market was valued at 436.4 million lei in 2009.
