Transdniestria asked Russia to provide financial assistance to it in connection with the world financial crisis. Vladimir Yastrebchak, the acting head of the Transdniestrian foreign affairs department, told a Moscow news conference that the crisis would hit Transdniestria in the coming months. He said that the industrial and banking sectors of the region would be the worst hit.

Yastrebchak reminded that Russia offered financial assistance to Transdniestria in 2006, when Chisinau and Kiev introduced the new customs regime. He said that Transdniestria would like Russia to continue providing financial assistance to the region given that the Transdniestrian economy would be affected by the world financial crisis.

The Transdniestrian official underlined that they count on Russia’s support in implementing social programs and insuring financial stability by maintaining the exchange rate of the Transdniestrian ruble. He voiced hope that Russia would examine the Transdniestrian officials’ proposal, saying that Tiraspol is ready to insure transparency in the use of the offered assistance.
