UAW local leaders OK GM pact

United Auto Workers local leaders unanimously approved a new contract agreement with General Motors Friday.

The proposal now goes to the union's rank-and-file members for final ratification.

The union says the proposal includes an initial payment of $24.1 billion by GM to a new retiree healthcare trust fund, a key element of the pact, the Wall Street Journal said.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said during a press conference in Detroit that he hopes to conclude membership voting by Oct. 10.

He said the overwhelming show of support from local union leaders is “a pretty good indication’ that the agreement will be accepted nationwide.

GM and union negotiators agreed to terms Wednesday morning following a two-day national strike by the UAW against the automaker. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
