Ukraine to remain a strategic market for Moldovan winemakers, Moldova-Vin states

Ukraine occupies the second place on the list of Moldovan wine importing countries (after Russia, which currently does not import Moldovan wines - editor's comment) and will remain a strategic market for the viticulture and winemaking sector of the country in the future too, appreciated Moldova-Vin Agency in a Thursday press release.

In 2006, Moldovan wine companies exported to Ukraine products worth US$37.14 million, which is 28% of the general export volume of spirits or a 2.1 times increase in comparison with 2005 (US$18.15 million).

In order to strengthen the presence of Moldovan products on Ukrainian spirits market, the Cooperation Agreement between Moldova-Vin and Ukrainian Union of Wholesalers and Spirits and Tobacco Producers was signed in Kiev on 31 January.

Inter alia, the agreement provides for the establishment of favorable conditions for foreign trade and other activities of the parties, provision of information and legal support, implementation of initiatives, press relations, consultations regarding legislative modifications and the conjuncture on the spirits market in both countries.

"Both parties confirmed their growing interest in cooperation and expressed their confidence that the number of exports will further grow. In our opinion, there are clear opportunities to increase wine export to Ukraine, in particular in terms of special wines and divines", Moldova-Vin also noted.

Recently, Moldovan Ambassador to Ukraine, Sergiu Stati, stated that the Republic of Moldova hopes to double supplies on Ukrainian market in 2007. "We would like to reach the amount of US$45 million", the ambassador said. He said that Moldovan wines might raise their price a bit, but currently they are sold at a price of US$7-9 in the trade network.

A presentation of the viticulture and winemaking complex was carried out in Ukraine before the economic and trade officials of foreign embassies accredited for Moldova in Kiev, followed by a tasting session of the wine samples from 11 Moldovan companies.

Earlier, the Republic of Moldova exported approximately 80% of its wines to Russia, which blocked imports in March 2006. // BASA-Press
