U.S. ambassador calls on business for social responsibility
U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Asif J. Chaudhry has called on Moldovan and foreign companies for a more active corporative social responsibility. He said this will favor not only the citizen living standard's improvement, but the development of enterprises, its better image at the market.
During the 4th International Conference of the Global Compact Network Moldova pact on Tuesday, Chaudhry said one of the corporative social responsibility components can become the careful attitude towards the nature, especially, the usage of non-traditional energy sources.
"I installed solar batteries at my house roof in Chisinau and I have now electricity not from the power supply network, but from the sun's energy", the Ambassador said.
He held as an example a Washington company involved in coffee selling that provided discount to its customers for each returned plastic cup. It promised to bring up the used cup utilization to 100% level and to sacrifice 1 million service hours for developing the locality it operates in.
Asif Chaudhry called on Moldovan and foreign companies operating in Moldova to follow the American company's example and also its own example.
UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Kaarina Immonen said more and more companies in Moldova use the corporative social responsibility model, which causes its development and also the achievement of the UNO goals- war against poverty, parity of chances, crisis prevention, and children exploitation elimination.
Head of BCR (Banca Comerciala Romana) Chisinau's marketing and public relations' [PR] department Vitalie Arvinte said the bank social responsibility is expressed in contribution to culture development and European values' promotion. 137 persons, including 80 women, work in BCR Chisinau that is included in the Erste Austrian group.
There was also cited the example of social responsibility of the Lafarge Ciment Moldova company, where are employed 350 persons, including 60 women.
According to PR manager of the Le Bridge Corporation company Ludmila Andronic, not only large, but also small and medium enterprises must manifest a corporative social responsibility; and cited the Plaiul Birladean farm company's example. It won a big prize in the national competition in the field of corporative social responsibility organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Compact Network Moldova. Thanks to the economic sector's high social responsibility, the village where the company operates differs from other by the fact that there are only few families that went abroad.
