U.S. stocks rise day before Fed meeting

 
 U.S. stock indexes edged up Monday morning, a day before the U.S. Federal Reserve was to meet to discuss interest rates.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 17.64 points, or 0.13 percent, to 13,442.52 in mid-morning trading. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index edged up 0.3 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,484.25.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index gained 1.12 points, or 0.04 percent, at 2,602.18.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index finished the day up 306.23 points, or 1.94 percent, at 16,127.42.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 9/32, yielding 4.491 percent, while the 30-year bond was down 6/32, yielding 4.735 percent.

The U.S. dollar fell to 115.11 yen from 115.30 yen in New York late Friday. The euro fell to $1.387 from $1.3878.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
