On Friday, a heavy-duty IL-76 freight airplane of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations delivered a 20-ton humanitarian assistance worth nearly US$1 million, the Russian Embassy in Chisinau told.

The consignment includes mobile power stations, rescue boats, emergency and rescue items etc. - all shipped by the Russian Government's decision in response to Chisinau's appeal to help alleviate the consequences of the recent ruinous flood on the Prut River.

The humanitarian consignment will be officially handed over to the Moldovan side directly at the Chisinau airport in the presence of Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Moldova Valery Kuzmin and Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat, who will subsequently arrange a joint briefing for the press.

Infotag's dossier: Russia's assistance to the separatist Transnistrian region of Moldova is by far greater. Moscow's financial assistance alone to the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic amounted to nearly US$13 million in 1H2010, and in 2009 the assistance figure was approximately US$30 million. Presently, Transnistria owes over US$2 billion for Russian natural gas. Nevertheless, the Tiraspol authorities use the gas payments, effected by local consumers, for covering the region's budget deficit.
