Volkswagen meets suppliers in India to discuss about new plant

Volkswagen has met with about 250 suppliers from India and abroad in Mumbai, India's financial capital to source material for its new Indian plant, which is on schedule to start production in 2009, the company said in a statement.

Joerg Mueller, the president of Volkswagen India, said that the company’s objective is to establish Volkswagen as a local manufacturer and a long-term business partner.

Pierre Bruedgam, Volkswagen India's executive director of procurement, said that a significant part of the production material will come from local suppliers. The German company will also identify potential partners for its global operations.

Volkswagen is investing about $530 million in a plant near the western Indian city of Pune, with a capacity 110,000 vehicles a year, starting from the second half of 2009.

India's passenger vehicle market is estimated to nearly double to 2 million units in annual sales by 2010.
