White-collar workers rally near Chrysler
About 300 union-represented, white-collar workers rallied at a Detroit-area Chrysler LLC facility Wednesday to protest the pace of contract negotiations.
One protester said the purpose of the "solidarity luncheon" at Chrysler's technical center in Auburn Hills was also to protest potential outsourcing of UAW jobs such as housekeeping and customer call-center workers, The Detroit News reported.
The automakers increasingly seek outside contractors to cut costs and the union wants to protect jobs.
Chrysler had no immediate comment on the rally, which did not disrupt Chryslers operations, the newspaper said.
The United Auto Workers and Chrysler, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. are meeting around the clock and are reported to have agreed on healthcare inflation and other matters, but are believed far from an accord in the most key issues -- and contracts expire at midnight Friday. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
