Value of electronic communication service market exceeded 5.4 bn lei in 2007

The total volume of sales on the electronic communication service market increased by 20.2% in 2007 against 2006, and exceeded 5.4 bn lei.

Thus, the volume of these sales amounted to 10.1% of the GDP of the country, according to the data of the National Telecommunications and Informatics Regulator (ANRTI).

Following this evolution, the structure of the market in 2007 changed as follows: mobile telephony accounted for 43.8%, fixed telephony accounted for 43.4%, data transfer for 4.4%, broadcasting services for 2.8%, other services for 5.7%. Compared with 2006, the share of fixed telephony in the market structure reduced by 4 percentage points, and the mobile telephony share increased by almost 2 percentage points.

ANRTI experts note that in 2007, mobile telephony won the competition with fixed telephony for the first time, both in terms of growth pace and volume of annual sales.

Vladimir Vozian, Department Head at ANRTI, said that the fact that fixed telephony gives in its positions is a natural phenomenon, as this market is mature and close to saturation. In exchange, the other markets, especially the mobile telephony service market, are rapidly growing.

Vozian explained the slow development of the data transfer and Internet access services by the lack of efficient competition caused by the limitation of access of alternative operators to the infrastructure and local network owned by SA Moldtelecom, the lack of strong alternative operators on this market able to compete in terms of infrastructure with the historical operator.

“Starting from the current situation on the wide band Internet service market, we may expect the fusion of small operators on this market or to entrance of mobile telephony operators on it”, the ANRTI official said.

According to the data of the regulator, in 2007, the value of the fixed telephony service market increased by 9.5% against 2006, and amounted to 2 bn 335.7 mln lei, and that of mobile telephony services increased by 26% and amounted to 2 bn 377.2 mln lei. // BASA-Press
