Remittances to Transdniestria rose 40% in 2007
The remittances sent by private individuals to Transdniestria through banks last year came to US$133.2 million, an increase of 40% compared with a year before.
According to the Transdniestrian National Bank, there were performed 189,000 operations. The sums sent to Transdniestria varied between $200 and $700. Most of the remittances came from Russia ($112.2 million), Turkey ($3.8 million), Italy ($2.9 million), the United States ($1.6 million) and Cyprus ($1.4 million). Taking into account the unofficial remittances, which make up about 30-55% of the legal remittances according to international experts, the remittances to Transdniestria could amount to $200 million or $375 per capita. Remittances from Transdniestria in 2007 totaled $13.7 million or about tenfold less compared with the remittances to the region.
