Moldova’s foreign debt up over US$234m
Moldova’s foreign debt has increased by US$234.85 million (7%) over the first three months of this year, to US$3.353 billion.
According to the National Bank, the public and publicly guaranteed external debt totaled US$986.27 million, while the private non-guaranteed external debt – US$2.548,87 billion. During the first quarter of this year, the private sector has received new loans to the value of US$160.81 million. The liabilities of the monetary authorities rose to US$175.10 million after receiving a new loan of US$18.88 million from the International Monetary Fund. Moldova’s central bank repaid US$9.51 million in this period. The international organizations continued to be the major creditors. They accounted for 31.8% of Moldova’s foreign debt. Late in March, Moldova owed US$175.1 million to the IMF, US$451 million to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association and US$2.95 million to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The loans make up 49% of the total foreign debt, the liabilities related to non-residents’ direct investments – 17%, while the commercial loans – 15.5%.
