Moldova produces goods that are not competitive on foreign markets, say experts
“Moldova is a producer of non-competitive goods that are not in demand on the markets of other states, which impose costs that the national economy cannot cover,” says a comparative study of foreign trade presented in Chisinau on July 24.
During the presentation, the study author, economic expert of IDIS “Viitorul” Viorel Chivriga said that Moldova exports mainly agri-food products. This is a promising thing on the one hand, but vulnerable on the other hand, because Moldova imports exactly the same products it exports. According to Chivriga, Moldova’s agriculture is far from being modern. It faces problems related to production, competitiveness and policies. The Moldovan exporters have been confronted by the same problems for many years despite authorities’ intentions to stimulate the national producers. Legal expert of IDIS “Viitorul” Viorel Furdui said that though Moldova has signed an impressive number of international documents, no progress in the area is made. “We have strategies that are not implemented. Instead on focusing on them we work out new strategies,” Furdui said. He also said that another problem is that the exporters are not properly informed about the import-export procedures, particularities and advantages. According to official statistics, the January-May imports totaled US$1.890 billion, while exports only US$608.6 million. The degree of covering imports with exports was 32.2%, by 4.6% lower than in January-May 2007.//REPORTER.MD Publication date: 24 July 2008 Source: Archive ADsRelated links- Only 0.5% of Moldovan citizens do not limit themselves when buying goods - Government made stricter requirements for goods import by natural persons - The people owning small enterprises will picket the parliament because the law of patent abolition aims at closing the markets in Moldova - The meat of 20 pigs, which were butchered in a non-authorized abattoir from the district of Falesti, was confiscated on the way to the markets from Chisinau - U.S. durable-goods orders fall 0.4 percent - U.S. durable goods demand down 1.7 percent - Regulator seeks to make markets safer - Citigroup lowers 3Q expectations - Goods and services supplied to Moldova within projects of technical assistance VAT exempted - U.S. durable-goods orders rise 3.1 percent Latest news
