Report: GM Canada, union reach deal

Union officials say a deal has been struck with General Motors Canada for workers affected by the planned shutdown of a plant in Oshawa, Ontario.

The Canadian Auto Workers union didn't release details but sources told the Toronto Star the agreement includes retirement incentives for older employees and buyouts to younger workers that are higher than in past plant closings.

In June, GM announced it was closing the Oshawa facility because of declining sales. Two plants in the United States and Mexico will also be shuttered.

The closure announcement came two weeks after GM Canada and the CAW agreed on a three-year contract highlighted by union concessions and led to a 12-day blockade of GM's Canadian headquarters.

The union said it would call meetings next week to outline the details of the agreement to workers, the Star said.
