EBRD will allocate 19m euros for modernizing Chisinau airport
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) said on Tuesday it plans to extend a 19 million euro ($29.9 million) loan for the upgrade of the Chisinau International Airport.
According to the official website of the EBRD, the proceeds will be used for the rehabilitation and upgrade of the existing runway, taxiways, aprons and other connected core assets of the Airport. The European Investment Bank (EIB) is considering co-financing alongside EBRD for up to an equal amount. The Project will also support implementation of more commercial practices at the Airport, and increased competition in the aviation sector in Moldova. The EBRD Board of Directors will make a final decision on September 30. The total project cost is 38 million euros. The Airport’s administration intends to attract a strategic investor to build also a cargo terminal. This investor could be one of the large goods and mail carriers. In 1998, the EBRD provided a US$9 million loan to the Chisinau International Airport for implementing the first Chisinau Airport Modernization Project assessed at US$12 million. The Government allocated the rest of US$3 million.
