Most U.S. executives would not choose to be a self-employed entrepreneur, even if they had the necessary start-up capital, a national survey said Tuesday.

Sixty-five percent of 150 senior executives from the nation's 1,000 largest companies said "the average executive" would not make the move to entrepreneurship, whereas 32 percent said he or she would, the Robert Half Management Resources survey said.

When asked the same question 10 years ago, 58 percent of respondents -- from human resources, finance and marketing departments -- said the average executive would not venture out alone, even with the necessary start-up capital, while 38 percent said he or she would, Robert Half said.

"Some executives may see more opportunity -- and security -- in their corporate roles than in venturing out on their own,” Executive Director Paul McDonald said.

"The failure of a sizable number of start-ups earlier in the decade left many senior managers wary of the risks associated with self-employment," he said. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
