U.S. stock indexes retreated from the start Friday after a report of larger-than-expected consumer inflation.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 98.85 points, or 0.73 percent, at 13,419.11. The Nasdaq composite fell 16.07 points, or 0.60 percent, to 2,652.42. The Standard and Poor's 500 was down 9.94 points, or 0.67 percent, to 1,478.47.

Crude oil futures added 10 cents to $92.35 a barrel.

Bonds dropped.with the 10-year Treasury note falling 10/32, or $3.13 per $1000 invested, to yield 4.254 percent Friday.

The dollar gained. The euro traded at $1.4500 from $1.4625 late Thursday, while the dollar changed at 113.01 yen from 112.22 yen.

Overseas, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 lost 0.14 percent to close at 15,514.51.

In economic news, the U.S. Labor Department said the November consumer price index jumped 0.8 percent, up sharply from October's 0.3 rise and the biggest increase since September 2005 // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
