Subsistence minimum increases in Moldova
The subsistence minimum in Moldova by the end of third quarter 2007 constituted on the average 1025 lei (USD91.1) - by 209 lei more against the same period of 2007. According to the official data, this money is enough to provide food and clothes for a month and to pay for public utilities only.
According to the National Bureau for Statistics, working men need the most considerable amount to cover their subsistence minimum, which increased for a year from 1086 to 1145 lei (USD101). Working women need a little less – 1018 lei (USD90.4). The pensioners’ and children’s subsistence minimum is determined to be equal to 883 (USD78.5) and 929 lei respectively (USD82.5). Alongside with this, the expenses for children at the age of 7-16 years are the most considerable – 1036 lei (USD92) a month, babies under one year need 378 lei ($34). The average pension in Moldova is – 552.13 lei, this sum covers only 57% of the subsistence minimum. The minimal retirement pension for agricultural workers is 361.5 lei (USD32), for other pensioners – 406.06 lei (USD36). A 10-20% annual indexation does not allow providing a decent living standard for old people. In January-November the average wage reached 2014 lei (USD177.9), it increased by 22%, against the same period of 2007.
